Essential Eight for Small Business
The Essential Eight is the Australian Government’s baseline for mitigating cyber security incidents. SS NovaTech helps small businesses understand it, assess where they stand and put the controls in place.
What is the Essential Eight?
The Essential Eight is a set of eight mitigation strategies published by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) through the Australian Cyber Security Centre. It is designed to make it much harder for attackers to compromise systems, and it is widely used as a practical benchmark for cyber security in Australian organisations of all sizes.
Organisations assess themselves against maturity levels, from Maturity Level One through to Maturity Level Three, with each level adding stronger protection.
The eight strategies
- Application control to prevent unapproved programs from running.
- Patch applications to fix known vulnerabilities quickly.
- Configure Microsoft Office macro settings to block risky content.
- User application hardening to reduce the attack surface of browsers and other software.
- Restrict administrative privileges so fewer accounts can make major changes.
- Patch operating systems to close security gaps.
- Multi-factor authentication to protect accounts even if passwords are stolen.
- Regular backups so you can recover from ransomware or data loss.
How we help small businesses
Frameworks can feel overwhelming when you do not have a security team. We translate the Essential Eight into practical steps for your business. We assess your current position, show you where the gaps are, and agree a realistic plan. Where it helps, we implement the technical controls, such as multi-factor authentication, patching, endpoint protection and tested backups, and document what has been done.
Essential Eight assessments and audits
An assessment compares your environment to the Essential Eight and the maturity level you are targeting. You receive a clear report of what is working, what is missing and what to do first. It is a useful starting point for businesses that supply to government or larger organisations, respond to security questionnaires, or are renewing cyber insurance.
If you need a formal independent assessment, we will tell you what is involved and help you prepare.
Where to start
Most small businesses make the biggest gains from three things: turning on multi-factor authentication everywhere, keeping operating systems and applications patched, and having backups that are tested and stored separately from your main systems. We can help you put these in place quickly and then work through the remaining strategies in order of risk.
Support after the assessment
Once the plan is agreed, we can deliver the work in manageable stages so your team is not overwhelmed and day-to-day operations continue smoothly. We provide clear documentation of what has been implemented, and we can run periodic reviews to confirm your controls are still working as your staff, devices and software change over time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Essential Eight mandatory for small businesses?
It is mandatory for some government entities. For private businesses it is a recommended baseline, but customers and insurers increasingly expect it.
What is an Essential Eight maturity level?
Maturity levels describe how completely and consistently the strategies are implemented. Level One addresses common attacks, with higher levels addressing more capable adversaries.
Can you do an Essential Eight audit?
We can assess your environment against the framework and help you improve. If you need a formal independent audit we will explain the options and prepare you for it.
Do the Essential Eight replace antivirus?
No. They are complementary. Endpoint protection remains important alongside application control, patching and the other strategies.
